A Brief Introduction to Jimei University
Jimei University, one of the key universities in Fujian Province, is a multi-disciplined university with a history of over 90 years. Located in Jimei School Village founded by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah-Kee (Chen Jiageng), Jimei University has now a student population of more than 26,000 and a faculty of over 1500 among whom, over 200 are professors and 580 associate professors.
Jimei University is one of the earlier universities of its kind in Fujian Province entitled to enroll international students including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese students. It has under it 20 colleges with 2 doctoral programs,56 postgraduate programs,2 course master programs in 10 fields and 66 undergraduate programs in nine disciplines, i.e. Engineering, Agronomy, Economics, Administration, Pedagogy, Science, Literature, Law and Arts, forming a complete educational system from preparatory course to degree education of bachelor, master and doctor with maritime majors such as nautical navigation, marine engineering and Fisheries as its hallmark and mainstay.
The University has an area of more than 153 hectares, with a floor space of over 1,020,000 square meters. In 2009 its new campus area was awarded as one of “China’s Top 100 Construction Projects” over the 60 years since the founding of the PRC, the only one in all the universities in China.The universitylibrary, with a 10G Ethernet to the campus network, has a collection of more than 2.28 million titles, as well as over 2,800 newspapers and magazines in both Chinese and foreign languages. The library has also a Digital Information Retrieval Center. There are 5 open-air stadiums, 3 standard swimming pools, a number of up-to-date tennis courts and well-equipped stadiums, a student center and other facilities as well, which provide students with spaces for studying,physicaltraining and entertainment. What’s more, the picturesque scenery with unique architecture onthe campus and the pleasant climate are attractive to the numerouscandidates at home and abroad.

I. Students Categories & Curriculum Setup
1. Degree-conferring students
a. Undergraduate students (schooling length: 4 years)
Candidates may apply for admission to any of the 66 majors with bachelor degree granted bythe University.
b. Postgraduate (schooling length: 3 years)
Candidates may apply for admission to any of the majors with master degree granted.
2. Language students
a. Chinese Language Students: Students can attend class for advanced studies of the Chinese language. The class aims at improving the students’ proficiency of Chinese communication so as to pass the Chinese language proficiency test (HSK). The major types of class and curriculum are listed as follows:
Elementary: Pronunciation of Chinese Language, Elementary Spoken Chinese, Elementary Listening Comprehension, Elementary Reading and Writing.
Intermediate: Intermediate Listening and Speaking of Chinese Language, Intermediate Reading, Intermediate Writing, and Intermediate Intensive Reading for Chinese Language.
Advanced: Advanced Listening and Speaking of Chinese Language, Advanced Spoken Chinese, Advanced Writing, Advanced Intensive Reading, and Chinese Newspaper-and-Periodical Reading.
Elective Courses:Training Classes for HSK, Comparative Studies of Chinese and Foreign Cultures, Contemporary Chinese Grammar, Chinese Lexicology, Appreciation of Chinese Classical Poetry, Chinese History and Geography, Chinese Martial Arts, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Music, Chinese Paper-cuts etc.
b. Short-term Training Students: Organized by local institutions, students (at least 20) can take all kinds of Chinese culture classes (2 weeks to 6 months), so as to improve theirspoken Chinese and better their command of the Chinese language and understanding of the Chinese culture.
Class Types are:Chinese-learning class, class for teachers of the Chinese language, classes of Chinese painting, Chinese martial arts, Chinese culture and tourism.Other short-term classes, professional or comprehensive,are to be held at the request of the organizer.
II. Basic Requirements
1. Applicant for admission to language classes is requited to have a graduation certificateof junior high school or above and a valid passport.
2. Applicant for undergraduate studies is required tohave a graduation certificate of senior high school or above. Foreign applicant is required to obtain the certificate of Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) level4. A valid passport is indispensable.
3. Applicant for postgraduate studies is required to have a graduation certificate of undergraduate studies or above. Foreign applicant is required to obtain the certificate of Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) level5. A valid passport is indispensable.
4. Applicant for package studies may directly discuss with Overseas Education College over teaching contents, methods as well as expenses.
III. School Calendar and Application for Admission
1. School Calendar: An academic year is divided into two semesters, the first beginning in September and the second in mid-February.
2. Application for Admission:
b. Applicants for admission to language classes are required to send the application form to the admission office of Overseas Education CollegeJMU by email (oec@jmu.edu.cn) , fax(0086-592-6182928) or post.
c. Applicants for undergraduate or graduate studies are required to send the application form to the admission office of JMU by email (zsbbg@jmu.edu.cn) , fax(0086-592-6185889) or post.
d. JMU will announce the admission outcome to the applicant by emailafter receiving the application form in about one month. The Form JW202 and the Notification of Admission to the applicant will be sent out in succession from June every year. Applicants may apply for a student visa with the Form JW202 and the Notification of Admission at the local Chinese embassy or consulate.
e. After entering China, students are expected togo through relevant procedures, such as foreign residence permits and health examination. All the formalities are to be handled by the university at the student’s expense, and will be completed in about one week after the day of registration.
IV.Scholarship
1.A scholarship provided by Fujian provincial government is ready to be applied for by any international students at Jimei University.(The maximum amount is RMB 30000 yuan/per-person/per-year)
2.High school students from Southeast Asian countries and regions can also apply for a scholarship of RMB 6500 yuan/per-person/per-year after admission to Jimei University for undergraduate studies. (among which, RMB 6000 yuan are provided by Fujian Fumin Education Funds and the rest of RMB 500 yuan by Fujian Overseas Exchange Association)

VI. Accommodation and Charges
The dorm building for overseas students is in the main campus area with beautiful surroundings and easy access. There is a canteen, a student recreation center and a shop inside the building. The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with such facilities as telephone, internet, TV set. There is a bathroom in every bedroom where hot water is available. In the laundry on each floor there are washing machines. Food at the canteen is around RMB 20-40yuan per person each day.
